Welcome to Fishtown / Kensington
Fishtown is Philadelphia’s cool uncle. And like all cool uncles, he has a repertoire of inside jokes (just ask any local about the Fishtown iced tea), knows where to find all the best music before anyone else (can you say Johnny Brenda’s, Kung Fu Necktie, Fillmore Philly?), and maybe even has a few tattoos (the street art in Fishtown is next level good).
Originally named for the shad fishing industry that cropped up along the Delaware River, Fishtown’s abundance of warehouses has since made way for re-purposed artist studios, open-air bars, and breweries.
It’s where you’re meant to live if you have an appreciation for all the finer things in life – music, art, excellent food – just as long as those finer things have a bit of an edge. You can find art still in its studio at nearby Crane Arts, you can spend an evening at the Elvis of dive bars, the El Bar (named, of course, for its proximity to the El), you can go vintage furniture diving for your new home at Jinxed, you can check the neighborhood out in advance with a night at the abandoned whiskey factory-turned-hotel Wm. Mulherin’s Sons. Plus, you’re still close to the also cool but maybe slightly less edgy entertainment of Northern Liberties.
